Newsletter #4 19 March 2007
www.haltthesalt.org.au
Dear Halt the Salt Supporter.
This is a follow-up to my broadcast email of 27 Feb 2007, in which
I asked all submitters to that point of time to help generate
a new wave of submissions.
At that time the number of subs that had been received by the
EPA was about 1,000, which while impressive, was not likely to
reach our target of 1,500 by closing date.
Now to the results of that appeal email. I have again included
detailed data further below.
You will see that the target got blown out of the water.
By close, we had a total of 2,414 submissions to the EPA.
The e-subs campaign went extremely well in the last two weeks.
5 days preceding appeal for more subs (day of appeal 27/2): Averaged
17 per day
14 days following appeal for more subs (day of appeal 27/2):
Averaged 96 per day
This was also on top of another 125 e-subs gathered by The Wilderness Society, and quite a few other submissions that went to the EPA directly that HtS doesn't have details of. We think that the total of unique submissions received by the EPA was over 2,700. (every e-sub had to originate from a different email account - that is, we did not allow multiple submissions from any one address)
For WA that is a massive response and has certainly been noticed. In fact, we think it's the second largest hit ever, behind the Ningaloo campaign of a few years ago.
So thank you, everyone of you. In particular thanks to those of you that used your address books to get the message ourt. This was absolutely critical to the dfinal numbers!
Now, to the future.
We think it unlikely that the EPA will be able to make recommendations to Government until the end of the year. This is because Straits Resources still has to put three further documents out for public comment.
When the time gets closer to the EPA recommendation, I will again
contact you for new support. You will all be able to place a new
e-sub, as it will be a 'new' campaign - to the Premier of Western
australia.
At that time HtS will be looking to flood the Premier's staff
with up to 5,000 new emails, over a period of about a month.
I will provide details at that time.
Please keep minotoring the website for updated information and
please also keep telling others about it. A submission continues
to go to the Premier for the moment.
So once again, many thanks from the Campaign team. John Baas. Campaign Convenor
